December is the best month to fly Valle de Bravo. The thermal cycle is at its strongest and most consistent, the weather pattern is fully established, and the conditions deliver day after day. If you can only visit once and you want to maximize your flying, December is the month.
Why December is the Strongest Month
By December, the rainy season has been over for more than a month. The air mass over central Mexico has dried out completely, creating the clear, stable conditions that let El Penon's thermal cycle operate at full power. The Hair Dryer - the daily thermal trigger that kicks on around 10:00 AM - is at its most reliable in December. Some days it fires a few minutes early, some days a few minutes late, but it fires every day.
The combination of dry air, strong solar heating on the dark volcanic rock, and stable upper-level winds creates thermals that are strong, well-organized, and sustained. December thermals at El Penon are the baseline that pilots compare every other month against.
Weather and Temperature
- Morning (7-9 AM): 45-52F (7-11C). Cooler than November. Bring a proper fleece for the drive to launch and setup. Gloves are not a bad idea for early morning.
- Mid-day (10 AM - 2 PM): 65-72F (18-22C). Comfortable flying temperature. The sun is strong at altitude even though the air temperature is moderate.
- Evening: 52-62F (11-17C). Pleasant for walking around town. A light jacket is useful for outdoor dining.
December mornings are the coolest of the season. This is actually a good thing for flying - the temperature differential between the cool morning air and the sun-heated rock faces creates stronger, more defined thermal triggers. The cooler mornings mean the thermals, when they come, are decisive and well-formed.
Thermal Conditions
- Thermal strength: Average climb rates of 3-5 m/s, with stronger cores in the early afternoon. Noticeably stronger than November on average. The climbs are punchy and well-defined.
- Cloudbase: 11,000-13,000 feet ASL. Higher than November, giving more room for XC transitions and longer climbs.
- Thermal window: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on most days. The window is slightly longer than November and the afternoon thermals sustain better.
- Consistency: Flyable conditions 6-7 out of 7 days. December is the most reliable month of the year. Complete washout days are extremely rare.
- XC potential: December offers the best XC conditions of the season. Thermal streets develop well, cloudbase is high enough for comfortable transitions, and the thermal window is long enough for ambitious routes. Flights of 40-60km+ are achievable for skilled pilots.
December vs November
Both months are excellent. The practical differences:
- December thermals are slightly stronger (3-5 m/s vs 2-4 m/s average)
- December cloudbase is slightly higher
- December mornings are cooler
- December is busier - more pilots, busier launches, fuller accommodations
- December trip prices may be higher due to holiday season demand
- December XC potential is the best of the year
For pure flying quality, December edges out November. For value, less crowding, and still-excellent conditions, November is hard to beat. Many returning pilots alternate between the two.
The Holiday Factor
December means holiday travel. This has two implications for paragliding trips:
The upside: Many pilots combine a Valle de Bravo trip with holiday time off work. A 10-day trip over the Christmas/New Year period is a popular option. You get peak-season flying and use your holiday time for something extraordinary instead of sitting at home.
The consideration: Valle de Bravo is a popular weekend getaway for Mexico City residents, and the holiday period brings increased tourism to the town. The flying sites are not affected (the sky is not crowded by tourists), but restaurants, hotels, and the town itself will be busier than at other times. Air Damien trips handle accommodation and logistics, so this does not affect your flying experience directly.
Who Should Come in December
Best month for XC pilots
If your goal is to push your cross-country distance, December gives you the best shot. Higher cloudbase, stronger thermals, and a longer thermal window all favor XC flying. Pair this with the XC clinic and you have optimal conditions for building distance.
Excellent for all levels
Despite the stronger thermals, December is suitable for P2+ pilots. The thermals are stronger than November but still well-organized and readable. A thermalling clinic in December conditions is an intensive learning experience - you get more thermal cycles, stronger lift, and more flight time per day.
Availability
December is the most popular month for Air Damien trips. Between the excellent conditions and the holiday timing, spots fill up months in advance. If you are considering a December trip, book early. We typically recommend reaching out 3-4 months ahead for December dates.
Book Your December Trip
December is peak season at its peak. The 10 Day Package over the holiday period is one of our most requested trips. Check our clinic schedule for December availability.
